Fresh rumors have popped up regarding the upcoming flagship iPhone 8 currently in line to be unveiled come September. In a new research note published by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will add a 3D-sensing front facing camera array to the smartphone for facial/iris recognition, gaming, and even taking 3D selfies. 9to5Mac published a detailed report breaking down the entire rumor, but here’s the gist of it…

The so-called ‘revolutionary’ technology will consist of a traditional camera sensor, an infrared projector, and a receiver. This will allow the iPhone 8 to merge depth information with 2D images to create content suitable for head-tracking games, 3D selfies, and facial recognition, a feature highly rumored to make it’s way into Apple’s special tenth anniversary iPhone.

It’ll also make standard facial recognition more secure, as the camera sensors will need to scan the person’s physical head in order to unlock the iPhone rather something like a 2D photo of him/her. You may also be able to take 3D selfies and place them in compatible games, so this indicates the technology should be pretty accessible by developers.

It seems likely that the 3D camera technology will remain exclusive to the rumored 5.8-inch OLED iPhone 8 which will launch alongside new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models. However, this information isn’t confirmed and should be taken lightly. In the same breath, another report shedding light on what the specifications of the next iPhones may be should also be taken with a grain of salt, but this one looks a bit more promising and realistic than the discussion above…

According to TrendForce (via 9to5Mac), the upcoming iPhone 8 will feature a 5.8-inch non-curved display, no home button, have a body similar to that of the current 4.7-inch iPhone models, and possibly arrive without a 32GB option. Instead, Apple will upgrade the bottom-line storage tier to 64GB and add a 256GB option which will appease customers who need more room for important data, apps, music, games, and more. In addition, 3GB of RAM will come inside much like the iPhone 7 Plus.

Pricing for the iPhone 8 will likely max out around the $1000 mark ‘or even higher.’ This is a pretty high price to pay for just a phone, but if Apple delivers on the rumors of 3D sensing, minimal bezels, good specs, and a solid build, you pretty penny may be worth it in the end.

What do you think? Will the upcoming iPhone 8 sport a 3D camera and drop the 32GB storage tier?
