A new report by DigiTimes has surfaced, and it attempts to shed light on the future of the iPhone, specifically this year’s model that will no doubt be a major upgrade since it’s the devices’ tenth anniversary. In the report citing Taiwanese sources from the company’s supply chain, Apple will design the next iPhone (possibly called iPhone 7s, 8, etc) with a glass front and rear and build the frame around the device out of ‘forged metal’ rather aluminum like in year’s past. A unique manufacturing process will be conducted in order to accomplish this new border called ‘metal forging’ over the previously used ‘billet milling.’

Of course, we’ve seen an all-glass iPhone before with the iPhone 4 family, so this design language won’t be foreign to the iPhone lineup. On the other hand, a forged metal border is completely new, so it’ll be interesting to see how it looks and feels. It’s said that this new element will likely be much tougher than the previously used aluminum alloy, but we’re obviously not talking military-grade. Nevertheless, the extra sturdiness of the material will be helpful for those who may drop their all-glass phone on its side or corner. And if I had to make one prediction based on these leaks, I’ll say that Apple will probably build some kind of drop protection or shock absorber into the iPhone. You know, just in case.

Regarding the iPhone’s other specs, we still don’t exactly have clarity. Recent rumors suggest 5-inch and 5.5-inch models alongside the usual A-series processor upgrade, but that’s about it. That said, we’re still 8 months away from seeing the next iPhone announced on Apple’s stage, so let’s remain patient and optimistic as we await Tim Cook’s arrival at the Fall 2017 keynote.
